This is a question that can be answered as one building that works in both modes. One such example is the garage / studio in the photo above. Storage units and a drop down bed are disguised as a panelled wall on the side wall facing the deck with steel and timber pergola frame. Minimal finishes on the floor and other walls function for both a garage and occasional studio dwelling when needed. A discrete heavy draped curtain obscures the fold up garage door.
